2000-2006 Clyde Waterfront URBAN II Programme
The URBAN II Community Initiative focused on a
limited number of target areas across Europe. The initiative promoted
an integrated approach to tackling social, environmental and economic
problems. URBAN II is distinct from, and complementary to, other
European Funds interventions.
The objectives of URBAN II were to:
- Promote innovative
strategies for sustainable economic, social and environmental
regeneration
- Enhance dissemination of good practice and exchange
of knowledge.
Building on the lessons from the 1994-99 URBAN Community Initiative,
which in Scotland operated in the areas of Glasgow North and Paisley,
URBAN II supported projects that provided an integrated approach to
high concentrations of social, environmental and economic problems
in urban areas.
In Scotland, URBAN II operated in the Clyde Urban
Waterfront Regeneration Zone, covering two linked but distinctive
communities of Clydebank South and Port Glasgow.
The Clyde Waterfront URBAN II Programme was
developed by a partnership representing local communities, economic
development agencies, social and economic partners and the Managing
Authority. Assistance was provided by SEP Ltd with consultation,
an important and consistent feature of the Programme's development.
URBAN II supported a vision for the regeneration
of the Clyde Urban Waterfront Regeneration Zone as a place to live,
learn, work and invest. The Programme recognised the history of industrial
decline, multiple disadvantage and social exclusion in the area.
It built on the opportunities for industrial and urban renewal including
those provided by current and future waterfront developments. It
embraced partnership and collaboration and recognised the importance
of harnessing the knowledge and energy of public agencies, the private
sector and local people in economic development.
